El Paso, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Kenneth Dixon rushed for 200 yards and a touchdown as the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs pulled out a 38-35 victory over the Texas-El Paso Miners in Conference USA action at the Sun Bowl.
Ryan Higgins completed 10-of-18 pass attempts for 110 yards and also scored two rushing touchdowns for Louisiana Tech (2-4, 1-1 C-USA), which ended a three-game losing streak.
Jameill Showers threw for 237 yards and three scores for UTEP (1-4, 0-2) while completing 18-of-33 passes. He was also intercepted once and scored a touchdown on the ground. Jordan Leslie brought in five passes for 114 yards and two touchdoesn and Aaron Jones had 121 yards on 18 carries.
There was plenty of scoring in the first half. Showers scored on a one-yard touchdown run less than five minutes into the contest to give the Miners an early lead.
The Bulldogs responded right away as Guillott scored on a five-yard touchdown run a little more than a minute later. The score capped off a drive that took only four plays and totaled 61 yards.
Louisiana Tech then took the lead on a seven-yard rushing touchdown from Higgins on its next possession.
A penalty and a sack backed Louisiana Tech up to its own 8-yard line on a drive early in the second quarter. However the Bulldogs still scored on the possession, as they picked up 92 yards on the next two plays, including a 62- yard touchdown run from Blake Martin.
Adairius Barnes returned a Showers' interception 44 yards to end the Miners' next possession. Despite starting at the UTEP 18-yard line after the return, the Bulldogs were unable to get into the end zone and settled for a 24-yard field goal from Kyle Fischer.
The Miners managed to keep the Bulldogs within range when Showers threw a 28- yard touchdown pass to Leslie on UTEP's next drive.
After the break the Miners made a strong push to get back into the game. The rally started when Trey Brown recovered a fumbled punt return in the end zone for a touchdown to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 24-21.
Louisiana Tech got a two-yard touchdown run from Higgins midway through the period to create some breathing room.
However, less than two minutes later, the Miners cut their deficit to three points once again on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Showers to Leslie.
The Bulldogs were able to jump out to a 10-point lead yet again when Dixon scored on a nine-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
A long drive for the Miners stalled at the Bulldogs' 6-yard line and Jay Mattox's 23-yard field goal attempt was blocked as UTEP came up empty.
Showers threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Wenrick with just over a minute to play to inch the Miners to within a score yet again. However the ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by the Bulldogs, who ran out the clock for the win.
