GAME NOTES: The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights try to get back on the winning track, as they clash with the Norfolk State Spartans as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the RAC.
Since defeating Caldwell in the season opener (89-71), the Knights have dropped five straight decisions, including a 100-50 defeat at the hands of nationally-ranked Arizona as part of this event a week ago. FDU also fell to Division II's Metro State out in Tucson during that trip as well, 87-76. The most recent setback for the Knights was a 67-63 final against Saint Peter's over the weekend.
As for the Spartans, they've not won three of their last four outings, the lone setback being a narrow 76-74 decision against East Carolina last week in North Carolina. A day later, NSU took down UNC Asheville by a single basket, 80-78.
FDU won the first and only meeting between the teams back in 2007 with an 80-64 triumph at home.
Sidney Sanders was the lone double-digit scorer for the Knights in their most recent outing as he tallied 19 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field before fouling out. FDU shot a collective 37.3 percent from the floor, which was actually below the squad's 39.1 percent behind the 3-point line. The team managed to hold Saint Peter's to only 34.0 percent from the field, but that mattered little as the Knights shot only 10-of-18 at the free-throw line and were outscored at the stripe by 19.
Not only is Sanders the leading scorer for the Knights on the season with 15.5 ppg, he is also first in assists with close to five per outing. Mustafaa Jones adds another 11.0 ppg to the attack, but FDU is being outscored by almost 14 points per game and a lot of that has to do with the fact that the team is pulling down just 28.2 rpg, compared to 40.8 rpg for the competition.
Scoring a game-high 22 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field, Brandon Goode led the way for the Spartans in their close call against UNC Asheville last week. Malcolm Hawkins may not have been as accurate from the field with his 5-of-15 shooting, but he did knock down 4-of-8 shots beyond the arc in order to finish with 16 points, while Anell Alexis tacked on 13 in the win as well. Jamel Fuentes drew close to a double-double as he paired nine points with eight assists.
Shooting just as well from beyond the arc (.452) as he is from the field to this point, Hawkins leads the Spartans with 20.6 ppg. Pendarvis Williams checks in with 17.0 ppg, putting in efforts all over the floor to come up with 5.8 rpg, 17 assists and eight steals, while RaShid Gaston checks in with 15.0 ppg and 9.3 rpg, although he has missed two of the team's first five games of the campaign.
One of the top scoring programs in the country at the moment, Norfolk State is producing a massive 88.8 ppg, an effort that spells doom for the slumping Knights today.
