GAME NOTES: The College of Charleston closes out its final regular season as a member of the Southern Conference on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars pay a visit to the Furman Paladins.
The Cougars have been in the league for 15 years, but will depart after this season for the Colonial Athletic Association. Winners in nine of their last 11 games, the College of Charleston will go into the conference tourney as the No. 3 seed due to being in second place in the South Division behind Davidson.
A win today would give the program its 11th road victory of the season, and it would come against a team that has struggled for the last month.
Furman has dropped nine in a row and hasn't won since Jan. 31 against Georgia Southern. The Paladins played the Cougars tough on Jan. 5, but dropped a 60-56 decision.
As for the Cougars, they are coming off a 55-50 win over Wofford on Thursday. Andrew Lawrence filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Willis Hall also scored 10 points. Charleston's reserves outscored their counterparts, 29-5.
Lawrence paces the Cougars in scoring (13.1 ppg) and Anthony Stitt (10.8) is also averaging in double figures. Adjehi Baru (9.7 ppg) leads the Southern Conference in rebounding (8.5 rpg). Anthony Thomas (8.4 ppg) and Hall (7.6 ppg) are also part of the starting lineup.
The Cougars are winning at an alarming rate despite shooting just 66.1 percent from the foul line, which is the worst mark in the SoCon. Defense, though, is their asset as the Cougars are holding teams to a conference-low 40.4 percent from the field, including 29.8 percent from 3-point range.
The Paladins dropped a 68-57 decision at The Citadel on Thursday. Larry Wideman paced Furman with 17 points, while Colin Reddick registered his fifth career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bryan Irwin chipped in 12 points.
Reddick leads the Paladins with 12.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for a team that's on the verge of tying a school record. That streak is 10 games, set during the 1984-85 season.
Since joining the Southern Conference in 1998-99, the Cougars have dominated the series with a 26-4 mark against the Paladins. The Cougars have won 10 of the last 11 meetings in the series. Expect this game to have a wider victory margin for the Cougars than the first meeting of the season.
