GAMES NOTES: The Georgia State Panthers will look to jump back above .500 when they head to Trask Coliseum for a Colonial Athletic Association battle with the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks on Wednesday night.
On Saturday Georgia State rolled over Old Dominion, 83-63, to earn its second straight win and sixth in the last seven games. At 12-12 the Panthers have evened their overall record while improving to 7-4 in league play which has them in a four-way tie for third in the league. Georgia State won't be on the road long, where it is 4-7, as the next two games are home contests against Towson and Hofstra.
UNC-Wilmington has been headed in the opposite direction. The Seahawks were taken down 81-68 on the road against Towson on Monday for their third straight loss. It was the 11th loss in 12 road tests for UNC-Wilmington which has just an 8-14 record overall and a 3-7 mark in league play. At home the Seahawks have actually been formidable with a record of 7-2 at Trask Coliseum where they will be yet again on Saturday against Hofstra.
When these teams met earlier this season Georgia State came away with an easy 81-63 victory at GSU Sports Arena. It was the fifth straight win for the Panthers against UNC-Wilimington. They now lead the all-time series, 10-8.
The Panthers shot better than 20 percentage points above Old Dominion on Saturday. Georgia State hit on 53.8 percent of its shots, including 16-of-33 from beyond the arc in the 20-point win. R.J. Hunter nailed 10 triples and finished with a game-high 38 points en route to CAA Player of the Week honors.
Hunter (17.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg) has been rather impressive in his freshman season as he has far and away been the top offensive option for the Panthers. The 6-foot-5 guard has hit 15 of his last 26 shots from beyond the arc and has scored at least 20 points in four of the last six contests. Devonta White (14.0 ppg, 3.8 apg) is the second option, while teaming with Hunter in the backcourt. Manny Atkins (13.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg) patrols the interior as the only other player on the team scoring in double figures. Overall the Panthers are putting up 67 points per game on 43.2 percent shooting which are each the second best marks in the CAA.
On the defensive end UNC-Wilmington couldn't get enough stops against Towson. The Seahawks allowed the Tigers to shoot at a 52.6 percent clip in the contest while managing a 39.7 percent rate themselves. The Seahawks were really beat up in the paint where they were outscored 48-20.
Keith Rendleman (15.8 ppg, 10.3 rpg) is the only player on the roster scoring in double figures and one of just three putting in more than 5.5 points per game. Rendleman is one of three players in the conference averaging a double-double on the season, amassing 12 double-doubles after a 19-point, 12-rebound effort against Towson. Chris Dixon (9.4 ppg) and Craig Ponder (8.3 ppg) are the next best options but both are shooting below 40 percent from the field. The lack of scoring options has UNC Wilmington currently ranked second to last in the CAA in scoring (61.4 ppg) while just a spot above that in field goal percentage (.402).
Getting back to Trask Coliseum could give UNC-Wilmington the boost it needs to get out of its losing rut. However if Hunter continues to make it rain from beyond the arc the Seahawks will be hard pressed to keep up with the Panthers.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Georgia State 71, UNC-Wilmington 67
