GAME NOTES: The La Salle Explorers welcome the George Washington Colonials to Tom Gola Arena on Wednesday night for an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup.
La Salle entered the week two games back of A-10 leader and 18th-ranked Saint Louis with two games remaining in the regular season. Those two will close out the schedule against one another on Saturday, although La Salle will need a win tonight as well as a Billikens loss at Xavier in order to have a shot at the A-10 regular-season title. The Explorers have also positioned themselves for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament thanks to wins in six of their last seven contests, including Saturday's 97-64 rout of Duquesne.
Meanwhile, George Washington has dropped five of its last six bouts to sink toward the bottom of the conference standings. The Colonials took on the Billikens over the weekend and came out on the wrong end of a 66-58 final. They'll host Dayton this Saturday in the regular-season finale.
GW leads the all-time series, 20-13, although the Explorers notched an 80-71 road victory when these teams met on Feb. 2. La Salle has won the last three head-to-head meetings.
The Colonials hung tough with nationally-ranked Saint Louis, and even led with seven minutes remaining in regulation, but the Billikens closed out the contest with a 21-10 run to seal the outcome. SLU's 21-of-24 effort from the foul line proved to be a key factor in the decision. Freshman Kevin Larsen, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, finished with a team-high 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting for GW. It marked the seventh time in his last 10 outings that Larsen reached double figures in the scoring column. Reserves Lasan Kromah and Dwayne Smith chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively. On the season, Isaiah Armwood leads the team with 11.6 and 8.6 rebounds per game. He is the only player on GW's roster averaging double figures.
Four players are scoring in double figures for La Salle, led by Ramon Galloway with 17.4 ppg. Tyreek Duren is next in line with 14.9 ppg, and he and Galloway have combined to knock down 116 3-pointers at 41-percent accuracy this season. Reserve Tyrone Garland (12.6 ppg) and starting forward Jerrell Wright (10.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg) round out the double-digit scorers. Last Saturday, the Explorers raced out to a 50-25 halftime lead over Duquesne thanks to a 62.1 percent shooting effort from the floor. Of their 18 first-half baskets, 14 were assisted. Five Explorers finished in double figures, led by Galloway with 23 points and Garland with 20 off the bench.
La Salle has won 26 of its last 31 games inside Gola Arena, and the team has posted consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time since 1988-89 and 1989-90. The Explorers' 10 A-10 wins also ties a program record since joining the conference in 1995. Still, with a potential NCAA Tournament bid on the line, don't expect the Explorers to let off the gas pedal coming down the season's backstretch.
