NCAA Game Summary - Southern Miss at Marshall

Huntington, WV (Sports Network) - Elijah Pittman led the way with 22 points as the Marshall Thundering Herd downed the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 88-84, in a Conference USA tilt at the Cam Henderson Center.

For the Thundering Herd (13-17, 6-9 C-USA), D.D. Scarver added 19 points and Tamron Manning chipped in with 12 points.

Dwayne Davis scored a game-high 35 points for the Golden Eagles (22-8, 11-4), while Jonathan Mills added 13 points and Jerrold Brooks finished with 12 points.

Shooting 64 percent from the field in the first half, Marshall took a 46-38 lead into the break. The Herd connected on 5-of-9 from 3-point range in the half. Southern Miss made 48.3 percent of its field goal tries and 6-of-12 shots from beyond the 3-point arc to keep the game within reach.

After halftime, the Golden Eagles got hot from the field, making 56 percent of their shots from the field, including 5-of-11 from 3-point distance. The Thundering Herd fell to 45.8 percent from the field, though they again had success from the perimeter, hitting on 5-of-11 from 3-point range. After trailing by as many as nine early in the second half, the Golden Eagles were able to work their way back and take leads of one point on several occasions, the last at 75-74, with 3:12 remaining. The game was knotted at 79-79 with just over a minute to play, but Marshall made 9-of-10 free-throws in the final minute to pull out the win in their final home game of the season.

The Thundering Herd had a 24-17 scoring edge from the free-throw line. Southern Miss outscored Marshall in the paint, 35-26, but missed 13 free- throws on the night.
