Lafayette, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Terrance Broadway threw for 335 yards and four touchdowns on 18-of-23 passing as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns downed the Texas State Bobcats, 48-24, in Sun Belt Conference action at Cajun Field.
Jamal Robinson was the leading receiver for the Ragin' Cajuns (3-2,1-0 SBC) with four catches for 114 yards and two scores. James Butler chipped in four catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. Alonzo Harris carried the ball 16 times for 78 yards and a score while Elijah McGuire finished with 58 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Tyler Jones finished with just 66 yards on 10-of-15 passing for the Bobcats (3-2,0-1). Jones also led the team in rushing, carrying the ball 13 times for 58 yards. Brandon Smith was the leading receiver with only 22 yards on three catches.
Louisiana took the opening kickoff and got into Texas State territory before Broadway fumbled the ball at the Bobcat 31-yard line. The Bobcats were unable to capitalize on that mistake and had to punt. After moving the ball 70 yards on six plays, Louisiana got on the board first with a four-yard touchdown run up the middle by Alonzo Harris.
After a big punt and a penalty pinned Louisiana inside their own 10, the Ragin' Cajuns drove 94 yards in just five plays, with a 44-yard touchdown strike from Broadway to Darryl Surgent putting the home squad up 14-0. Later, Broadway connected on his second touchdown pass of the half, this time for 34 yards to Robinson that put the Ragin' Cajuns up 21-0 with 8:24 to play in the first half.
The Bobcats managed a 33-yard field goal late in the half. their first of the year.
Louisiana capped off their scoring barrage in the first half with another touchdown drive. They moved the ball 75 yards in just over two minutes, with Broadway tossing another touchdown pass to Robinson, this one from four yards out with 28 seconds left in the half, giving Louisiana 28-3 lead going into intermission.
Broadway continued his strong night, throwing his fourth touchdown pass of the night to Butler from 20 yards out in the opening minute of the second half.
After the Bobcats fumbled on their next possession deep in their own territory, Ragin' Cajuns tacked on a field goal to extend their lead to 38-3 with just over 10 minutes to play in the third quarter.
After another big punt backed the Ragin' Cajuns up to their own one-yard line but Broadway marched his team down the field, and nine plays and 99 yards later, McGurie rushed it in from four yards out to put Louisiana up 45-3 with under four minutes to play in the third quarter.
The Bobcats finally got into the end zone as Brandon Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, making the score 45-10. After Louisiana tacked on a 25-yard field goal midway through the fourth, Smith struck again, this time returning the kickoff 100 yards for his second touchdown of the night.
The Bobcat offense added a score of their own in the final minutes of the game, with backup quarterback Duke DeLancellotti running it in from two yards out to set the final score at 48-24.
The Ragin' Cajuns finished with 572 total yards of offense to just 196 yards for the Bobcats. Louisiana converted 9-of-14 third downs and held Texas State to just 3-of-11.
