Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Rice Owls easily beat Conference USA rival the Texas-El Paso Miners 45-7 at Rice Stadium, led by quarterback Taylor McHargue's four touchdown passes.
The Owls (6-2, 4-0 C-USA) were a machine offensively on Saturday. McHargue had 259 passing yard on 8-of-19 passing in addition to his touchdowns. Ross Charles had 152 yards rushing and a touchdown on 21 attempts. Jordan Taylor led all receivers with 185 yards and three touchdowns on just four catches.
The Miners (1-6, 0-4) were unable to do much of anything. Quarterback Blaire Sullivan went 6-of-9 passing for 112 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Aaron Jones had 186 rushing yards on 29 rushes. Ian Hamilton had 108 yards and a touchdown on four catches.
Rice would start the scoring with a 28-yard field goal by Chris Boswell.
The Owls would follow that up with a 60-yard touchdown pass from McHargue to Taylor.
UTEP answered back with a 50-yard touchdown strike from Sullivan to Hamilton. That made the score 10-7 with 6:43 left in the first half.
The Owls came right back at the Miners and scored on a 17-yard touchdown completion from McHargue to Dennis Parks.
Charles would have a one-yard touchdown rush with 17 seconds left in the half to make the score 24-7.
Rice would continue to score coming out of halftime as a 72-yard touchdown pass from McHargue to Taylor would make the score 31-7.
With 13:40 to play a 23-yard touchdown pass from McHargue to Taylor would earned Rice a 38-7 lead
Jowan Davis finished off the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown rush for the Owls.
This was the Miners fifth straight loss and the Owls fourth straight win. Rice is now bowl eligible with its sixth win on the season.
