U.S. rider Madden out of jumping competition

London, England (Sports Network) - American Beezie Madden, the 2008 bronze medalist, was knocked out of the Olympic equestrian individual jumping competition in the first qualifier Saturday.

Madden was eliminated after her horse, Via Volo, failed to take a jump.

"It was all going well and she was jumping amazing, then she started fighting me quite a bit and all our good work went wrong," said Madden, who can still medal with the U.S. in team competition.

"She hasn't done a lot of shows recently and I think she became a bit too impressed with the whole place. Luckily, the rest of my team went well, so I must get things right tomorrow."

American teammates McLain Ward and Rich Fellers and Reed Kessler remained in the individual competition. Ward and Fellers were among 32 riders who had clean runs.

The second qualifier is Sunday, along with the first round of team jumping.

Madden helped the U.S. win back-to-back gold medals in team jumping in the last two Olympics.
