London, England (Sports Network) - Om Yun Chol of North Korea set a new Olympic record in the clean and jerk Sunday at the London Games, helping him take gold in the men's 56-kilogram weightlifting event.
Om lifted 125 kilograms in the snatch portion and set the new Olympic mark with a clean and jerk lift of 168. The gold medal is the first for North Korea in any men's event at the Olympics since Kim Il won 50-kilogram freestyle wrestling at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Om's epic clean and jerk score helped him become the first person from the "B" group to win gold in the history of the Olympic Games.
"I am very happy and thankful to my leader and weightlifting association to give me the strength to lift like this," said Om.
Gold medal favorite Wu Jingbiao of China finished second with a total of 289.
Valentin Hristov of Azerbaijan won the bronze, giving his country its first weightlifting medal.
