Beijing, China (Sports Network) - American David Zhuang was ousted from the Olympic table tennis tournament Tuesday after suffering a tough loss on the first day of singles.
Zhuang claimed the first set against Nigeria's Segun Toriola, but ended up losing a seven-set thriller four games to three. Toriola claimed the last two sets to squeeze out an 8-11, 11-8, 2-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8 win.
Afterward, Zhuang said his biggest disadvantage was not having played in the team tournament.
"It was hard for me to get into it today," he said. "I am pretty happy with how I played. I had chances and at the crucial moment I just played too short."
The men's and women's singles will run until the medal matches on Saturday.
