Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Italy's Andrea Minguzzi defeated Zoltan Fodor of Hungary to win a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Beijing Olympics on Thursday.
Minguzzi won the 84 kg match, 3-1, to claim gold in his first Olympics. The 21-year-old police officer from Imola, Italy, had beaten reigning gold medalist Aleksey Mishin of Russia in the quarterfinals and Sweden's Ara Abrahamian in the semifinals.
Of particular note was the win against Mishin, also the reigning world and European champion.
"It was a very important victory," said Italian coach Carlo Marini. "Mishin was the world champion, so beating him is an impressive feat."
Abrahamian shared the bronze medal with Nazmi Avluca of Turkey.
