NFL Game Summary - Jacksonville at San Francisco

(Sunday, November 29th)

Final Score: San Francisco 20, Jacksonville 3

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Alex Smith completed 27-of-41 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns, while the San Francisco defense caused two turnovers and recorded six sacks in a 20-3 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12 action at Candlestick Park.

Vernon Davis caught six passes for 69 yards and a score for the 49ers (5-6), who bounced back from a 30-24 loss to Packers last Sunday. Frank Gore caught seven passes for 14 yards and a TD. Gore led the ground attack with just 33 yards on 16 carries for San Francisco, which won despite being outgained 357-284.

"The thing that we wanted to accomplish - the thing that we have not done all year - is put a collective win together," said 49ers head coach Mike Singletary. "I think today collectively it was getting headed in the right direction in terms of the way we have to win."

David Garrard connected on 25-of-36 passes for 307 yards and fumbled twice for the Jaguars (6-5), who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Maurice Jones- Drew carried the ball 15 times for 75 yards to surpass 1,000 yards on the ground for the season for the first time in his career.

Josh Scobee made just 1-of-3 field goals for Jacksonville, which went a miserable 0-for-4 in the red zone.

"A little bit of a tough day for us out here. We had some opportunities in this football game and were just not able to execute in some of the critical areas," said Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio.

The 49ers used a 46-yard Joe Nedney field goal on the first possession of the game to jump out to an early 3-0 edge.

Jacksonville was set up with a short field after Brian Witherspoon returned a punt 42 yards to the San Francisco 47 late in the first period. Jones-Drew caught a 14-yard pass on first down to move the ball to the 30. But the Jags' offense sputtered from there and were forced to settle for a field goal attempt. Scobee pulled a 40-yard field goal wide left with 13:48 left until half.

The 49ers took over and put together a 10-play, 70-yard scoring drive. Faced with a 3rd-and-10 at the Jaguars 36, Smith connected with Michael Crabtree on a 27-yard pass. Three plays later, Davis hauled in a three-yard TD catch to make it a 10-0 game with 8:58 to go.

Following a series of punts, The 49ers started at their own 41 with 3:58 remaining. Smith and Davis hooked up on a 30-yard pass play on 4th-and-1 to set up a 1st-and-goal at the seven. On third down, Smith scrambled to the right before finding Gore in the right corner of the end zone from four yards out for a 17-0 lead with 52 seconds remaining.

Jacksonville drove down the field before the end of half and got a 32-yard Scobee field goal to make it 17-3 at the break.

The Jags turned the ball over on the first possession of the third. Jacksonville was in the red zone and close to making it a game, when Garrard fumbled the ball during a sack. Justin Smith recovered for the 49ers at the 27-yard line.

San Francisco capitalized with a 10-play, 64-yard march that Nedney capped off with a 27-yard field goal for a 20-3 margin with 7:25 left.

The 49ers' defense then stepped up in a big way to essentially seal the victory. Garrard led the Jaguars on a lengthy drive, which had them set up at the San Fran 22 after Zach Miller hauled in a 10-yard pass on 3rd-and-5. Jones-Drew rushed for nine yards on first down but lost one yard over the next two plays, setting up 4th-and-2 at the 14 as the third-period clock ran out.

Smith and Parys Haralson sacked Garrard and forced him to fumble the football. Ray McDonald fell on the loose ball at the 34 for the 49ers. But San Francisco went three-and-out on offense, giving the Jags the ball at their own 22 after the punt with 13:05 to play.

A costly mistake once again brought the Jaguars' next drive to a halt. The Jaguars were able to march down the field, thanks to a 13-yard catch-and-run by Jones-Drew on a 4th-and-3. Later in the drive, Jones-Drew rushed six yards to set up a 1st-and-goal at the seven. A four-yard Jones-Drew run was followed by two incompletions, and Scobee came on to attempt a 21-yard chip shot. Scobee's attempt was unsuccessful as it bounced off the left upright.

Scobee's look of disbelief summarized the day for Jacksonville, which did little on offense during its final possession of the contest.
