Rays place Scott on DL

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Luke Scott will begin the season on the 15-day disabled due to a right calf strain he sustained earlier this week.

Scott left a minor league game on Friday after aggravating the injury and is expected to be sidelined at least 2-to-3 weeks, though Rays manager Joe Maddon told reporters on Saturday that the left-handed hitter could be out more than a month.

The 34-year-old served as Tampa Bay's primary DH last season and batted .229 with 14 home runs and 55 RBI.

Scott's absence opened up a spot on the Opening Day roster for first baseman/outfielder Shelley Duncan, who had his contract purchased from the club on Sunday along with veteran relief pitcher Jamey Wright.

The Rays also selected the contract of reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo and placed him on the 60-day DL. The right-hander is recovering from Tommy John surgery performed last September.
