Gomez, Brown share lead in Puerto Rico

Rio Grande, Puerto Rico (Sports Network) - Fabian Gomez and Scott Brown both set a new 54-hole record to share the lead at the Puerto Rico Open.

Gomez fired a 7-under 65 on Saturday, while Brown carded a 5-under 67 to bring them both to 18-under 198 following three rounds on the Composite Course at Trump International Golf Club, besting Kevin Streelman's mark of 199 set in 2010.

Blayne Barber (66), Brian Stuard (66), Jordan Spieth (67) and Steve LeBrun (70) sit in a group tied for third place at 14-under. Spieth's day included his first hole-in-one on the PGA Tour at the 192-yard 11th hole.

Ryo Ishikawa also recorded his first ace on the tour at the eighth. He finished Saturday's third round with a 6-under 66 to jump into a tie with six others for eighth place at minus-12.

Morgan Hoffman (68) is alone in seventh at 13-under.

Gomez entered the day in fifth place, but quickly moved up the leaderboard by opening his round with birdies at the first, second and third.

After rolling in another birdie at the par-5 fifth, he closed out his front nine with back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth to hit the turn at 17- under.

He then dropped a shot with his first bogey since the first round at the 10th, but got that stroke back plus another with birdies at the 15th and 17th to grab a share of the lead.

"Today I went out looking forward to a good round and got off to a solid start making two birdies in a row to start," said Gomez. "So that made me feel really well and confident for the day. I also felt very confident with my putter, so that was critical as well."

Brown, who was coming off a 9-under 63 on Friday to grab sole possession of second place, also started his third round strong with consecutive birdies at the first and second.

He then cooled off with five straight pars before a bogey at the eighth dropped him to 1-under on the day at the turn.

But Brown came out firing on his inward nine, collecting four birdies over that span to move him into prime position for a chance at his first career PGA win.

"I mean it's a position I've never been in before obviously out here. I've been close, in contention, the last few groups, but never in the final group. So it'll be new," Brown said. "But I'm playing good. So I look forward to good things."

Second-round leader Andres Romero struggled to four bogeys and a triple-bogey seven at the par-4 12th en route to a 3-over 75 on Saturday, falling into a tie for 15th place at a total of 11-under.
