NCAA Game Summary - Ball State at Western Michigan

Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Western Michigan kept its perfect home record intact behind the leadership of Alex Carder who completed 29-of-41 passes for 404 yards as the Broncos defeated Ball State, 45-35, in Mid-American Conference play at Waldo Stadium.

Carder threw two touchdown passes for Western Michigan (5-4, 3-2 MAC), but also struggled as he threw three interceptions. Jordan White was superb with nine catches for 172 yards with two touchdowns as he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark on the year for the second straight season and broke the school record for career receptions with 261. Chleb Ravenell also had a big afternoon with nine catches for 157 yards.

Tevin Drake led WMU's rushing attack with 85 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries as the team lodged its fourth home win in as many tries this season.

Ball State (5-4, 3-2) was led by Keith Wenning as he completed 35-of-50 passes for 335 yards. Wenning also struggled with interceptions as he threw two picks, but along the way he threw three touchdown passes. Barrington Scott pushed the Cardinals' offense as he ran for 104 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Briggs Orsbon had an outstanding afternoon with 103 yards and two touchdowns on a game-high 10 catches.

Western Michigan jumped out to an early lead when Carder completed a 40-yard touchdown strike to White to put Broncos up 7-0 with 11:29 remaining in the opening quarter.

Jahwan Edwards tied the score 7-7 when he rushed eight yards for a score for the Cardinals four minutes later.

BSU opened up the scoring in the action packed second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by Scott just over a minute into the period that gave the Cardinals a 14-7 lead.

WMU answered by scoring four straight touchdowns in a span of less than three minutes. Carder completed a three-yard scoring pass to Robert Arnheim to even the score. Arnheim completed a 61-yard touchdown pass to White and Drake followed the passing scores with a pair of touchdown runs from four and 20 yards to make the score 35-14 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.

Ball State then had its own outburst in the final minute of the half as Wenning completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Orsbon with 52 seconds remaining, the duo then hooking up for a 16-yard TD pass play just moments later after the Cardinals intercepted a pass and gained possession in order to make the score 35-28 at the break.

The Broncos extended their lead back to double digits at the 6:44 mark of the third quarter as Carder rushed four yards for a touchdown. The only score of the period put Western Michigan up 42-28 heading into the final frame.

The Cardinals made it a game again when Wenning completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jack Tomlinson that made it 42-35 with just under six minutes left in the contest.

John Potter's 40-yard field goal for the Broncos with 1:55 remaining in the game left the hosts with the 10-point win.

Western Michigan converted on 11-of-15 third downs, while Ball State struggled and converted on just 5-of-13 chances. Both offenses were on fire as the game had a total of 1,165 yards of total offense.
