Corvallis, OR (Sports Network) - Sean Mannion threw for 267 yards and two
touchdowns and Jovan Stevenson added 99 yards rushing and another score as
Oregon State topped Arizona 37-27 in Pac-12 play at Reser Stadium.
Mannion, the only freshman quarterback starting for a BCS-conference team,
completed 32-of-41 passes, and despite two interceptions, was instrumental in a
huge second quarter by the Oregon State (1-4, 1-2 Pac-12) offense. Stevenson's
99 yards marked a career high, and Markus Wheaton added six catches for 54
yards.
Arizona (1-5, 0-4) has now lost five straight. Nick Foles threw for 378 yards
and one touchdown while rallying the Wildcats from a 24-point deficit in the
third quarter, but the hole proved to be too deep. Arizona finished with just
53 yards rushing.
After a scoreless first quarter, Oregon State put together a quick 14-0 lead
early in the second quarter. Stevenson rushed for a one-yard touchdown that
capped a 17-play, 92-yard drive with 11:38 remaining in the quarter to make it
7-0. On the ensuing possession, Clayton York blocked an Arizona punt and
returned it 41 yards for a score.
Arizona got on the board on the next series when Foles drove the offense 80
yards in just 2:32 and found Dan Buckner on a 28-yard touchdown pass, and
despite a missed extra point from kicker Alex Zendejas, the Wildcats cut the
lead to 13-6.
Buckner finished with eight catches for 144 yards and one score.
Oregon State tacked three more points on the board after kicker Trevor Romaine
connected on a 37-yard field goal at the 2:26 mark of the second quarter, and
Mannion capped a quick six-play, 39-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown pass
to Joe Halahuni with 16 seconds before halftime. Arizona fell in an even deeper
hole after fumbling the ensuing kickoff, which set up a 40-yard field goal by
Romaine as first half time expired, and Oregon State went to recess with a 27-6
lead.
Romaine built the Oregon State lead to 30-6 after hitting a 20-yard field goal
with 7:28 remaining in the third quarter.
That's when Arizona mounted its rally, ripping off three consecutive touchdowns
to pull within 30-27 early in the fourth quarter. Keola Antolin ran for a 13-
yard touchdown to make it 30-14 with 4:45 remaining in the third quarter.
Arizona's defense went to work on the first play of the next possession, as
Shaquille Richardson intercepted a Mannion pass and returned it 28 yards for a
touchdown, making it 30-20 after the Wildcats failed to convert the two point
conversion.
Foles orchestrated a 10-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard
touchdown run from Ka'Deem Carey on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Mannion gave the Beavers a crucial score with 5:22 remaining, hitting Halahuni
for a two-yard touchdown pass that gave the Beavers a 37-27 lead that wouldn't
relinquish.
Arizona amassed 431 yards of total offense, while Oregon State posted 408
yards. The Beavers won the time of possession battle by nearly 12 minutes.
