NCAA Game Summary - Wyoming at B-Y-U

(Saturday, October 23rd)

Final Score: B-Y-U 25, Wyoming 20

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Bryan Kariya ran for 88 yards and a touchdown, and the BYU defense came up with a late stand to hold off the Wyoming Cowboys, 25-20 in a Mountain West Conference showdown at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

J.J. Di Luigi added 82 yards and a score for the Cougars (3-5, 2-2 MWC), who had lost five of their previous six contests entering the weekend.

Austyn Carta-Samuels threw for 110 yards and a touchdown on 13-of-26 passing for the Cowboys (2-6, 0-4), losers of three straight. Wyoming's offense managed just 173 total yards for the game after a sloppy first half.

Di Luigi got BYU on the board first with a seven-yard touchdown run at the 10:35 mark of the first quarter, capping a 10-play, 58-yard opening drive.

On the ensuing possession, Carta-Samuels was dropped for a 13-yard loss and fumbled the ball in the end zone, as the Cowboys fell on it for a safety.

BYU pushed its lead to 16-0 on Kariya's four-yard touchdown run with just under five minutes to play in the opening quarter.

Wyoming made it a 16-7 game midway through the second quarter, when Keith Lewis stepped in front of a Jake Heaps pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown.

A 44-yard field goal by Cowboys' kicker Ian Watts with 52 seconds to play in the half trimmed the deficit to 16-10.

After the teams traded field goals in the third quarter, BYU struck again at the 12:34 mark of the fourth quarter, as Heaps found Luke Ashworth for a 12- yard touchdown pass. However, the Cougars could not convert the two-point attempt, and they led 25-13.

Wyoming continued to hang around, and Carta-Samuels connected with Chris McNeill for a 16-yard scoring strike with 6:50 to play, cutting the margin to 25-20.

Wyoming got the ball back with 4:42 to play and marched 60 yards in 15 plays, but the drive stalled at the BYU 25-yard line and the Cougars ran out the final seconds.

The Cowboys fell behind early after being held to negative-18 yards of total offense in the first half.
