Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Desmond Scott broke free for a 35-yard touchdown
run with under a minute remaining to lift the Duke Blue Devils to a thrilling
55-48 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in an ACC bout at Wade Wallace
Scott led a Blue Devils (3-6, 1-4 ACC) ground attack that amassed 230 total
yards with a 97-yard effort. Brandon Connette added 78 yards on the ground
with a pair of touchdowns in just 12 carries as well, while signal-caller Sean
Renfree twice found the end zone rushing to compliment a steady 17-of-29 for
219 yard effort under center. Cooper Helfet caught seven passes for 122 yards
and a score as well in the win.
Marc Verica completed 24-of-46 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns in the
losing effort for Virginia (4-5, 1-4), but the quarterback was also
responsible for three costly interceptions as well. Keith Payne ran for 121
yards and two touchdowns for the Cavaliers, while Dontrelle Inman hauled in 10
passes for 239 yards and a score.
The Blue Devils took a 7-0 lead early in the opening period of play following
a 30-yard toss from Sean Renfree to Cooper Helfet.
Less than two minutes later, Brandon Connette gave the Blue Devils a 14-0
advantage after a two-yard plunge.
The Cavaliers got on the board midway through the stanza, as Keith Payne found
the end zone following an 11-yard scamper.
But the Blue Devils struck again late in the frame with a 20-yard run by
Connette to take a 21-7 lead.
The Cavaliers cut the Duke lead to 21-14 late in the second quarter after a
20-yard Robert Randolph run, but the Devils tacked on a 30-yard Will
Snyderwine field goal just minutes later.
With under 30 seconds remaining in the half, Verica completed a nine-yard
toss to Payne to pull the Cavaliers to within 24-21.
The Cavaliers took a 28-24 lead midway through the third period with a 19-yard
toss from Verica to Burd.
The Blue Devils reclaimed the lead just minutes later, however, as Donovan
Varner found the end zone following a nine-yard scamper.
A 47-yard Snyderwine field goal late in the frame gave the Blue Devils a 34-28
advantage, while a one-yard plunge from Renfree early in the final period of
play pulled Duke even further ahead, 40-28.
Verica pulled the Cavaliers to within 40-35 midway through the stanza with a
10-yard strike to Perry Jones, but the Blue Devils responded just minutes
later with a 37-yard touchdown run from Renfree.
Verica found Dontrelle with a 10-yard toss late in the frame.
Payne then found the end zone with just over two minutes remaining following a
six-yard scamper, but a two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the
Cavaliers with a slim 48-47 lead.
Scott then broke a 35-yard touchdown run with under a minute remaining, and a
two-point conversion attempt on a Connette rush was good, to seal a 55-48 Blue
