Kent, OH (Sports Network) - Trent Steelman threw for 149 yards and ran for 37
yards and two touchdowns as the Army Black Knights bested the Kent State
Golden Flashes, 45-28, in a non-conference matchup at Dix Stadium.
Steelman was 9-of-10 through the air for Army (6-4), which became bowl
eligible with the win. The signal-caller picked up his 37 yards on 12 carries,
while Jared Hassin ran for 75 yards on 23 carries and scored a touchdown as
well. Brian Cobbs carried the ball just nine times, but he ended with 64 yards
and two TDs as well.
Giorgio Morgan and Spencer Keith both spent time under center for the Golden
Flashes (4-6). Morgan was 5-of-9 through the air for 122 yards and two
touchdowns, while Keith was 7-of-11 for 95 yards. Tyshon Goode caught seven
balls for 155 yards and a touchdown. Eugene Jarvis picked up 71 yards on 10
carries and scored a TD.
Army took the early lead when Hassin dashed 12 yards for a score with 8:09
left in the first quarter. Steelman extended the Black Knights' lead to 14-0
on a two-yard burst with 2:03 left in the quarter.
Kent State got on the board with 12:46 left until halftime when Jarvis raced
19 yards for a touchdown.
Cobbs scored for Army on a two-yard run with 4:25 left in the half, followed
by Steelman who scored his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard run to
make the score 28-7 at the break.
Jacquise Terry scored for the Golden Flashes from two yards out to make it a
28-14 game with 11:43 left in the third quarter.
Raymond Maples scored for the Black Knights on a five-yard run with 7:32 left
in the period as the teams continued to alternate scoring drives.
Kent State drew closer when Justin Thompson caught a two-yard scoring pass
from Morgan at the 4:23 mark of the third, leaving Army with a 35-21 edge
heading into the fourth period.
Cobbs scored for Army on a three-yard burst with 13:07 left in the game.
Morgan then hit Goode on a 72-yard touchdown pass less than a minute later,
but Army's Alex Carlton added a 49-field goal later in the frame to secure the
17-point decision on the road.
Army totaled 233 rushing yards, but Kent State actually outgained Army
410-382 overall. With the victory Army is bowl eligible for the first time
