Eugene, OR (Sports Network) - Darron Thomas threw four touchdowns and
LaMichael James scored twice on the ground as fifth-ranked Oregon ripped
Portland State, 69-0, at Autzen Stadium.
Thomas completed 9-of-18 passes for 140 yards and James posted a career-high
227 yards on 14 carries for the Ducks (3-0), who topped New Mexico and
Tennessee in previous weeks and cruised to victory by setting a school record
with 528 yards on the ground.
"It was a little wet but we ran the ball well and opened up the passing game,"
said Thomas. "We've got to work hard, get better."
Jeff Maehl recorded 82 receiving yards and two scores on three catches, while
Remene Alston, Jr., Nate Costa and Josh Huff added a rushing TD each.
Connor Kavanaugh was 8-of-21 for 18 yards and one interception for the Vikings
(1-2), coming off a win over UC-Davis. Tygue Howland was 4-of-11 for 48 yards
and a pick in relief.
"We're very disappointed," said Portland State head coach Nigel Burton. "In
the end it was more mental breakdowns than physical breakdowns. I expected us
to execute better than we did."
Cory McCaffrey was limited to 28 yards on the ground and Julius Thomas hauled
in four balls for 48 yards in the rout.
Oregon continued its home domination with three touchdowns in the opening
James broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run, Thomas hit Maehl on a 47-yard
scoring pass before the two connected again on a seven-yard TD.
James opened the second quarter for the Ducks with a 35-yard touchdown run,
and it was 35-0 for Oregon on a 12-yard hook-up between Thomas and Daryle
Rob Beard hit a 27-yard field goal, then a 45-point half was capped when
Thomas found Malachi Lewis for an eight-yard TD pass.
In the third quarter, Beard made a 41-yard try, Costa scored on a four-yard
run and Huff added an 18-yard dash for a score which made it 62-0. Alston
punctuated the period and the scoring with a 20-yard run to paydirt.
Oregon has won all four meetings, and has outscored Portland State by a 124-12
margin in the last two matchups...PSU fell to 2-26 all-time against FBS
opponents...The Ducks head to Arizona State next Saturday and the Vikings are
off until October 2 against Idaho State.
