NCAA Game Summary - Bowling Green at Buffalo
(Tuesday, November 3rd)
Final Score: Bowling Green 30, Buffalo 29
Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Tyler Sheehan threw an 18-yard touchdown pass
to Freddie Barnes with 39 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, as Bowling
Green came back to shock Buffalo, 30-29, in a Mid-American Conference thriller
at UB Stadium.
With Buffalo (3-6, 1-4 MAC) ahead 29-23 with 2:59 to go in the fourth quarter,
Bowling Green (4-5, 3-2) went in front when Sheehan finished off an 11-play,
75-yard drive after connecting with a wide opened Barnes for an 18-yard
touchdown to tie the game. Matt Norsic then tacked on the extra point to put
the Falcons in front 30-29 with only 39 seconds remaining.
Buffalo was unable to muster any offense on its final drive and Bowling Green
took a knee to run off the final seconds and preserve the win.
Sheehan finished with 313 yards passing on 22-of-40 efficiency with an
interception and also rushed for TD, while Barnes had eight grabs for 122
yards and the game-winning score for Bowling Green, which recovered after
dropping a 24-10 decision to Central Michigan on October 24. The Falcons have
won three of four since dropping its previous four contests. Willie Geter
added a pair of rushing scores.
The Falcons improved to 5-2 over Buffalo in the all-time series.
Zach Maynard finished 13-of-27 passing for 149 yards and a TD, and Jeffvon
Gill led the rushing attack with 175 yards on 23 touches and a score for
Buffalo, which has lost five of its last seven.
Buffalo opened the scoring on its first drive of the game when Ike Nduka ran
it in from three yards out. However, a Geter one-yard plunge with a shade
under five minutes left in the first period tied things.
Mario Henry put the Bulls back up seven with a two-yard run in the early
stages of the second. Geter then banged in for a one-yard score with 6:16
remaining, but Norsic's extra point attempt was off the mark and Buffalo held
a 14-13 edge.
A Maynard-to-Jesse Rack 18-yard hookup with 2:34 left in the half increased
the UB lead to 21-13, which would be the score heading into the break.
Norsic hit from 34 yards out early in the third to make it a five-point game,
then a muffed punt by Geter led to a Gill five-yard TD run and a two-point
conversion stretched the Bulls lead to 29-16.
A blocked punt early in the fourth set up a Sheehan four-yard TD run allowing
Bowling Green to get within six points. The Falcons then got the ball back
with good field position after a failed Bulls set, but facing a 4th-and-3 from
the UB four, BGU decided to go for the seven instead of attempting a chip shot
field goal and Sheehan's pass in the end zone fell incomplete with the hosts
maintaining the 29-23 lead with a little over eight minutes to play.
