Houston, TX (Sports Network) - G.J. Kinne threw for 251 yards and one
touchdown as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane defeated the Rice Owls, 27-10, in a
Conference-USA battle at Rice Stadium.
Kinne also scored a rushing touchdown for Tulsa (4-1, 2-0 C-USA), but it was
Jamad Williams who led the ground game for the Golden Hurricane, as the junior
rumbled for 72 yards and one touchdown in the win.
Ryan Lewis only completed 12-of-32 passes for Rice (0-5, 0-2), finishing the
game with just 99 yards and one touchdown. John Shepherd was no better under
center, as the signal caller completed just 5-of-11 throws for 45 yards and
was also intercepted.
The Golden Hurricane took an early 7-0 lead when Williams scored on a six-
yard touchdown run.
However, Rice evened the score at seven apiece early in second stanza when
Lewis hit Taylor Wardlow with a 29-yard scoring strike.
The Owls took a 10-7 lead late in the first half with a 42-yard field goal by
Clark Fangmeier, but Tulsa used a 29-yard kick by Kevin Fitzpatrick to go into
the break tied at 10 apiece.
Tulsa reclaimed the lead midway through the third quarter when Kinne scored on
a six-yard run.
Tulsa added a 28-yard field goal by Fitzpatrick with just over four minutes
remaining in the third quarter, extending its lead to 20-10.
Kinne crushed all hopes for Rice, as the quarterback connected with A.J.
Whitmore for a 39-yard scoring strike, giving the Golden Hurricane a 17-point
Tulsa's defense dominated the remainder of the game, holding Rice off the
scoreboard throughout the final quarter.
Overall, the Golden Hurricane limited Rice to just 191 total yards, including
just 47 rushing yards on 1.6 yards per carry.
