NCAA Game Summary - Wake Forest at Duke

Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Riley Skinner threw for 372 yards and five touchdowns, leading the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 45-34 win over the Duke Blue Devils in an ACC tilt at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Marshall Williams finished with eight catches for 119 yards and a TD for the Demon Deacons (5-7, 3-5 ACC), who end their season on a positive note after dropping five in a row. Devon Brown caught two touchdown passes and finished with 82 yards on eight catches.

The Blue Devils (5-7, 3-5) needed a win to become bowl eligible, but they came up short despite 387 passing yards and three TDs by Thaddeus Lewis. Donovan Varner also had a big game, catching 11 passes for 174 yards and two scores.

Duke scored on the game's third play from scrimmage, as Lewis hit Varner in stride for a 56-yard scoring strike to stake the Blue Devils an early 7-0 lead.

The Demon Deacons answered on the fourth play of their opening possession, when Skinner connected with Brown for a 28-yard touchdown pass to tie the score.

The blistering early pace continued on the third play of Duke's next possession, with Lewis hooking up with Austin Kelly for a 62-yard touchdown pass to put the Blue Devils back on top.

Wake Forest answered again midway through the first quarter. as Skinner connected with Chris Givens for a 54-yard scoring strike to knot the score at 14-14.

The Demon Deacons took a 21-14 lead on Skinner's eight-yard touchdown pass to Brown at the 10:50 mark of the second quarter.

Duke cut the deficit to 21-17 on Will Snyderwine's 51-yard field goal with 5:21 to play until halftime.

Skinner gave Wake a 28-17 with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Harris at the 9:46 mark of the third quarter.

Duke answered with another Snyderwine field goal, this one from 33 yards out, to make it a 28-20 game with 7:10 remaining in the third quarter.

But the Demon Deacons responded with another big play, as Skinner connected with Williams for 48 yards. Williams fumbled at the end of the play, though he was able to recover in the end zone for a touchdown.

The Blue Devils trimmed the margin to 35-27 at the 9:45 mark of the fourth quarter, when Lewis capped an 80-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge.

Wake's next drive took more than five minutes off the clock and resulted in a 44-yard field goal by Jimmy Newman to make it a 38-27 game with four-and-a- half minutes to play.

The Demon Deacons sealed it on Duke's next possession when Alex Frye stepped in front of a Lewis pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown.

The Blue Devils cut the margin to 11 on Lewis' 21-yard touchdown pass to Varner with 2:31 to play, but they could draw no closer.

Wake won the time-of-possession battle by nearly nine minutes.
