NCAA Game Summary - Florida Atlantic at South Carolina

Columbia, SC (Sports Network) - Brian Maddox had two rushing touchdowns and a receiving score as the South Carolina Gamecocks cruised to a 38-16 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls in non-conference play.

Stephen Garcia connected on 20-of-27 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown for South Carolina (2-1). The quarterback also ran for a score, while Jarvis Giles paced the Gamecocks with 113 rushing yards and a touchdown on only 11 carries.

Rusty Smith completed 21-of-31 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in defeat for Florida Atlantic (0-2).

Leading just 17-16 at intermission, South Carolina completely dominated the third quarter to turn a close game into a blowout. Maddox had a three-yard touchdown run and a six-yard touchdown reception from Garcia, separated by less than five minutes. Giles then had a 12-yard scoring scamper, putting the Gamecocks ahead 38-16.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

South Carolina jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by Maddox and a 41-yard Spencer Lanning field goal.

With 55 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Florida Atlantic made the score 10-3 with a 37-yard Ross Gornall field goal.

Midway through the second quarter, the Gamecocks extended their advantage to 17-3 on a 15-yard touchdown scamper by Garcia.

The Owls made things interesting in the final five minutes of the first half. Smith threw a pair of touchdowns passes, a 23-yarder to Chris Bonner and a three-yarder to Jamari Grant. After 30 minutes of action, South Carolina held a narrow 17-16 edge.

Both teams had 21 first downs in the tilt, but South Carolina finished with a commanding 516-307 advantage in total yards.
