NFL Game Summary - Dallas at NY Giants

(Sunday, December 6th)

Final Score: NY Giants 31, Dallas 24

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes to help the New York Giants defeat the Dallas Cowboys, 31-24, and tighten the NFC East standings.

The loss drops the Cowboys (8-4) into a tie with Philadelphia for division supremacy. New York sits a game back at 7-5, and hosts the Eagles next Sunday.

Manning totaled 241 yards through the air, but completed just 11-of-25 attempts and was picked off once in the end zone. Brandon Jacobs had a 74-yard touchdown reception and added another score on the ground for the Giants, who came in having dropped five of their last six games.

"That was kind of the theme for the day. We just hit a lot of big plays," said Manning. "We weren't real consistent and playing our best football the whole time, but when we needed a big play guy, someone stepped up."

Tony Romo set a Dallas team record with 41 completions and threw for a career- high 392 yards with three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough to send the Cowboys to a third straight win. Jason Witten had a personal-best 156 yards on 14 receptions, while Roy Williams caught a pair of touchdowns.

Marion Barber was limited to 36 yards on 15 carries in defeat.

The Cowboys trailed 14-10 at the break, despite gaining nearly 200 yards offensively and possessing the ball for over 21 minutes.

After a series of punts, Nick Folk drilled a 34-yard field goal to open the scoring with 8:53 remaining in the second quarter.

Ahmad Bradshaw fumbled on the ensuing drive and Cowboys defensive tackle Jay Ratliff recovered at the New York 26. It was 10-0 Dallas when Romo and Williams hooked up for a four-yard touchdown with 3:14 left.

The Giants, though, quickly countered as Hakeem Nicks capped a four-play, 74- yard drive with a 21-yard TD reception just past the two-minute warning.

Barber coughed the ball up on the next series, and Jacobs' one-yard run with 19 seconds remaining put New York on top. Folk missed a 57-yard attempt as time expired.

Dallas regained the lead on Williams' five-yard reception, but the Giants answered on their next play from scrimmage as a short toss to Jacobs turned into a 74-yard TD, making it 21-17 with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter.

"We're in a zone defense and that shouldn't happen to us," said Cowboys coach Wade Phillips. "It comes down to me. We wanted to jam the tight end more because we knew they were going to run him deep and they've done that against us previously, or tried to. But, we should have more people seeing the ball and I think the other guy cut off our backer that was trying to get to the ball."

After Folk hooked a 42-yarder wide left, Lawrence Tynes converted a 23-yard kick and the Giants led 24-17 with 7:23 remaining in regulation.

The Cowboys went three-and-out on their next series, and Domenik Hixon returned the subsequent punt 79 yards for a score.

A 22-yard strike from Romo to Miles Austin trimmed the deficit to 31-24 with 58 seconds left, but Dallas failed to recover the onside kick.
