CFL announces top players from both divisions
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Canadian Football League on Wednesday announced the winners of the top players in several categories from both the East and West Divisions.
"In a year that we are celebrating the 100th Grey Cup and our proud history, it was truly amazing to see today's players perform at such a high level and set so many major CFL records," said CFL commissioner Mark Cohon.
Jon Cornish of the Calgary Stampeders took home the nod for best player and best Canadian player in the West, while Edmonton's JC Sherritt was named best defensive player, British Columbia's Tim Brown earned top special-teamer, while Brown's teammates Jabar Westerman and Jovan Olafioye were tabbed as top rookie and offensive lineman, respectively.
Montreal's Shea Emry also was doubly honored, with best Canadian player and top defensive player for the East. Chad Owens of the Toronto Argonauts was tabbed as best overall player, while Hamilton's Chris Williams snagged special-teams honors, Winnipeg's Chris Matthews was given best rookie and Josh Bourke from the Als was named best offensive lineman.
The group combined to set four CFL single-season records, including most combined yards (Owens), most rushing yards by a Canadian (Cornish), most kick return touchdowns (Williams) and most tackles (Sherritt).
