Virginia routs Maryland to claim CWS spot
Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Sborz spun seven scoreless innings, Kenny Towns went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Virginia found its way back into the College World Series by coasting to an 11-2 win over Maryland in Game 3 of the Charlottesville Super Regional.
The No. 3 national seed Cavaliers earned their third trip to Omaha in six years by rallying to take the final two matchups of the series after dropping Saturday's opener.
After pounding out 17 hits in a season-saving 7-3 victory on Sunday, the Cavaliers got to Terrapins starter Bobby Ruse early to put Maryland on its heels. Derek Fisher's two-out RBI single put Virginia ahead and Towns followed with a triple to left that staked the Cavs to a quick 3-0 lead.
Sborz took it from there, holding the Terps to four hits while striking out nine before exiting with a 6-0 advantage and having thrown 111 pitches.
Towns struck again with men aboard in his next at-bat, driving in two with a third-inning single to give UVa a five-run cushion. Brandon Downes tacked on an RBI single later in the frame.
Maryland did manage to close the gap in the eighth on Blake Schmit's two-run double, but Virginia ended any comeback hopes by scoring five times in its half of the frame.
Branden Cogswell's two-run single preceded a Daniel Pinero double that knocked in two more, with Pinero crossing the plate on a Mike Papi double.
Ruse lasted just 2 1/3 innings and was tagged for six runs on six hits.
