| NOTES: |
|
The Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona is round 5 on
the 2013 Formula One calendar.
This will be the 23rd time the Spanish GP has run at Circuit de Catalunya. The
first race was held on Barcelona's Pedralbes street circuit in 1951. The event
in Spain has also been held at Barcelona's Montjuich Park (four times), Jerez
(five times) and Jarama (nine times). It has run at Circuit de Catalunya each
year since 1991.
Michael Schumacher holds the record for most victories in the Spanish GP with
six. Schumacher, who retired from F1 for good at the conclusion of the 2012
season, won this race in back-to-back years from 1995-96 and then scored four
consecutive victories in it from 2001-04. All but one of his wins in this race
came from the pole position.
Kimi Raikkonen from Lotus is the only active driver who has multiple victories
in the Spanish GP. Raikkonen won it in 2005 and '08.
Six other current drivers have one win in the Spanish GP: Fernando Alonso
(2006), Felipe Massa (2007), Jenson Button (2009), Mark Webber (2010),
Sebastian Vettel (2011) and Pastor Maldonado (2012).
One year ago, Maldonado from Williams claimed his inaugural win in his early
F1 career in Barcelona. He also became the first Venezuelan driver in the
sport to win a grand prix. He qualified second for the Spanish GP but
inherited the pole after Lewis Hamilton, who drove for McLaren at the time,
was stripped of the position due to a fuel violation in qualifying. Maldonado
and Williams became the fifth different driver and constructor to win in the
first five grand prix last season.
Maldonado became the third driver in F1 history to score his maiden win in the
Spanish GP. Niki Lauda's inaugural victory came in this race in 1974, and
Jochen Mass won it for the first time the following year.
Alonso leads all active drivers with six podium appearances in the Spanish GP.
This is the "home race" for the Spaniard.
All but one of the previous 22 Spanish GPs held at Circuit de Catalunya have
been won from either the first or second starting positions. Schumacher
started third when he won this race in 1996.
Round 6 in this year's F1 world championship is the May 26 Monaco Grand Prix.
Mark Webber won last year's most prestigious race on the F1 circuit.
