| NOTES: |
|
For the second consecutive season, the pole sitter dominated this race, as
Sebastian Vettel posted his ninth of 11 victories last year, en route to the
2011 championship.
Vettel put on a flawless performance, leading all 61 laps to post his 19th of
22 career titles, defeating Jenson Button by 1.737 seconds. Vettel held a
sizeable lead over Button for a majority of the race. He held an 18-second
advantage over the McLaren driver at one point, but Button came on strong in
the closing laps.
Fernando Alonso started on the pole in 2010 and led all 61 laps around the
3.152-mile (5.073 km) Marina Bay street circuit on a sultry night in Singapore.
The victory was also his 25th career F1 win, which at the time, moved him into
a tie for seventh-place on the circuit's all-time race winners list with Jim
Clark and Niki Lauda. Since then, Alonso has added five more wins to his total
and is now fifth on the wins list, just one behind Nigel Mansell. The Spaniard
survived several collisions in 2010, including two that forced the deployment
of the safety car. He also held off a hard-charging Vettel from Red Bull Racing
for most of the race.
Lewis Hamilton started on the pole and relinquished his lead briefly after
pitting the second time during the 61-lap race en route to his second victory
of the 2009 season and the 11th of his F1 career. Timo Glock placed second,
9.634 seconds behind Hamilton.
In 2008, Fernando Alonso captured the checkered flag, as he finished nearly
three seconds ahead of Nico Rosberg for his 20th career F1 title. The victory
snapped a year-long winless streak, a stretch that went back to the Italian
Grand Prix in September of 2007.
The pole sitter has won this race the last three years. The Singapore Grand
Prix circuit has several distinct features, including the Sheares Corner at the
start, the Memorial Corner at turn 7 and the Singapore Sling during turn 10.
With seven races remaining, Alonso owns a wide lead over four drivers.
Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen and Vettel trail by 37, 38 and 39 points respectively,
while Mark Webber is 47 points behind. Hamilton picked up 10 points on Alonso
following his win in Italy.
The next Formula One race is the October 7 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka,
Japan, where Jenson Button is the defending race winner.
