| NOTES: |
|
With the points race over and done with, the only item still up for grabs
the final two races, is whether or not Sebastian Vettel will record his 12th
and 13th wins of the season and tie Michael Schumacher's 2004 record of 13
victories in one calendar season.
Vettel certainly has the upper hand this week, as he enters the race as the
two-time defending champion.
Last year, he clinched his first world championship at Abu Dhabi, as he
defeated Fernando Alonso by four points to become the youngest driver in
Formula One history to claim the top spot.
Vettel, then 23, started on the pole and led the way until he pitted on lap 25,
allowing Jenson Button from McLaren to take the top spot. Vettel took the lead
for good after Button made his stop with 15 laps remaining. The young German
crossed the finish line 10 seconds ahead of Button's teammate, Lewis Hamilton,
for his fifth win of the season and the 10th of his F1 career.
This season, Vettel clinched the title after placing third in Japan during the
first week of October. All told, Vettel has 11 wins in 17 starts and has not
finished outside the top-4 in 2011. After posting 10 wins in his first three
full F1 seasons, Vettel now boasts 21 career titles, good for 12th on the all-
time list.
Back in 2009, Vettel won in the inaugural race at Abu Dhabi after crossing the
finish line 17.857 seconds ahead of his Red Bull Racing teammate Mark Webber.
Despite the victory, Vettel finished second to Jenson Button in the final
standings, 11 points back.
The Yas Marina Circuit, conceived by German architect and well-known track
designer Hermann Tilke, features nine right turns and 12 left turns. The
circuit is one of the few venues on the F1 calendar to run in an anti-
clockwise direction. It's also part of Abu Dhabi's Yas Island development,
which covers an area of 25-square kilometers.
The 2011 Formula One season concludes with the November 27 Brazilian Grand
Prix in Sao Paulo. Sebastian Vettel won last year's race there.
