NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Edmonton

(Sunday, April 21st)

Final Score: Anaheim 3, Edmonton 1

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Jonas Hiller stopped 27-of-28 shots as the Anaheim Ducks inched closer to winning the Pacific Division title with a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Cam Fowler, Kyle Palmieri and Corey Perry scored for the Ducks, who are five points ahead of the Kings for first place in the Pacific Division.

Taylor Hall scored the lone goal for the Oilers, who are officially eliminated from playoff contention. Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves.

"We knew we were out of the playoffs before tonight," said a disappointed Hall. "We made it really tough on ourselves losing three straight games on the (four-game) road trip. To have another season out of the playoffs, to have another season where we're playing meaningless games at the end of the year, is very frustrating and something we're not proud of."

The Oilers' lone goal came a minute into the game. Hall led a 2-on-1 rush into the Anaheim zone and beat Hiller with a wrist shot.

Fowler jammed home a rebound with 1.1 seconds remaining in the opening period to make it 1-1.

Anaheim took a 2-1 lead with 56.4 seconds to go in the middle stanza. Palmieri tried to get a pass over to Teemu Selanne on a 2-on-1 rush, but the puck was stopped by a diving Ladislav Smid. However, Palmieri managed to dig the puck from under Smid and find the back of the net.

The Ducks made it a 3-1 game at the 8:53 mark of the third. Ryan Getzlaf sent a backhand pass in front for Perry, who tipped the puck past Dubnyk.

"It's great to have a win again after what has been happening for the last little while," said Hiller. "We knew that we needed to play better, but sometimes it is not that easy. Tonight I think that everybody worked a little harder and that made the difference."

Game Notes

These teams will meet again on Monday at Rexall Place ... Edmonton forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will miss the final week of the season because of a shoulder injury that will likely require surgery. The Oilers said on Sunday that Nugent-Hopkins is headed to Cleveland to have his shoulder examined.
