Caps keep Alzner with 4-year extension
Arlington, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals retained the services of restricted free-agent defenseman Karl Alzner on Wednesday, thanks to a four-year contract extension worth $11.2 million.
"We are very pleased to sign Karl Alzner to a contract extension," said Caps general manager George McPhee. "Karl is just entering his prime and has been a model of consistency for our organization since he entered the League. He plays tough and valuable minutes against some of the NHL's top players every game."
A stay-at-home defender, Alzner played in all 48 regular-season games during the lockout-shortened season, totaling one goal and four assists. He added two points in a seven-game, first-round loss to the Rangers.
The former fifth-overall pick in the 2007 draft by Washington, Alzner has spent his entire five-year career in America's capital, recording 39 assists and 44 points over 263 appearances.
Alzner was also a two-time gold medalist for his native Canada at the World Junior Championships.
