Cowboys add S Allen

Irving, TX (Sports Network) - The Dallas Cowboys signed veteran safety Will Allen to an undisclosed contract, the team announced Wednesday.

Allen provides the Cowboys with nine years of NFL experience, the last three of which came in a reserve role with Pittsburgh. The 30-year-old did start seven games for the Steelers last season, compiling 34 tackles and three passes defensed, and could be a candidate to fill the void on Dallas' back end created when the team was forced to release 2012 regular Gerald Sensabaugh for salary cap reasons earlier this month.

A fourth-round pick of Tampa Bay in the 2004 draft, Allen spent his first six seasons with the Buccaneers and started 16 games for the team in 2006. Over 130 career contests, he has recorded 250 tackles, four interceptions, seven passes defensed and made 33 starts.

To clear room for Allen's signing, the Cowboys released wide receiver Anthony Armstrong.
