Description: According to mlb.com, Yankees manager Joe Girardi admitted Saturday that David Phelps' role will be decided this spring.
Insight: Phelps is competing with Michael Pineda, Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno for the fifth spot in the New York rotation after going 10-9 with a 4.11 ERA in 55 games (23 starts) the last two seasons. He'll serve in long relief if he doesn't win the starting job.

8/6/2013 5:17:00 PM
Description: New York starter David Phelps has a new elbow strain and will be shut down for two weeks, according to Andy McCullough of the Newark Star-Ledger.
Insight: Phelps has been out since July 5 due to a right forearm strain. He's questionable to make it back this season, and even if he does his rotation spot has been taken by Ivan Nova.

7/7/2013 12:30:00 PM
Description: New York starter David Phelps has been moved to the disabled list with a strained forearm.
Insight: Phelps must have suffered the injury during his fourth of July start against Minnesota. Ivan Nova (3-2, 4.09 ERA) has absorbed Phelps' spot in the starting rotation.

7/4/2013 5:54:00 PM
Description: Yankees starter David Phelps allowed four runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings Thursday to beat the Minnesota Twins.
Insight: Phelps rebounded from allowing nine runs on nine hits in 2 1/3 innings at Baltimore his last time on the mound. He has been better than his 5.01 ERA indicates, but he's still in danger of losing his spot in the rotation to Ivan Nova or Michael Pineda.

6/29/2013 10:50:00 PM
Description: Yankees starter David Phelps gave up nine hits and nine runs in 2 1/3 innings Saturday at Baltimore.
Insight: Meanwhile, Ivan Nova threw 5 2/3 innings and allowed just two earned runs with zero walks in relief. Phelps has pitched well as a starter prior to Saturday, but manager Joe Girardi might opt to swap him with Nova.

6/9/2013 8:56:00 PM
Description: Yankees starter David Phelps went toe-to-toe with Felix Hernandez Sunday and came away with a no decision.
Insight: Phelps allowed one run on three hits and struck out six in six innings. He has bounced back nicely from getting shelled by the Mets on May 29. Over his last two starts, he has given up four hits and one earned run while fanning 13 batters in 12 innings.

6/4/2013 10:43:00 PM
Description: Yankees starter David Phelps was dominant Tuesday against the Indians after allowing four earned runs in 1/3 innings his last start.
Insight: Phelps gave up just one hit over six scoreless innings. Despite his last outing, he has a 4.15 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP, but his hold on the fifth rotation spot is tenuous with Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda looming.

5/29/2013 10:32:00 PM
Description: Yankees righthander David Phelps allowed four earned runs on four hits and walked two in just 1/3 of an inning Wednesday against the Mets.
Insight: That will put a dent in the ERA. Phelps had won two straight games and pitched to a 3.27 ERA in 33 innings since joining the rotation earlier this month. Ivan Nova threw five innings of one-run ball (5 H, 1 BB, 6 K) in relief to enter himself into the rotation conversation. The team is currently awaiting the returns of Andy Pettitte and Michael Pineda, but will still need a fifth starter even after those pitchers come back.

Description: Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects right-hander David Phelps to have a bruised forearm. Phelps will have precautionary X-rays. SOURCE: Bryan Hoch, MLB.com
Insight: Phelps allowed four earned runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings to win his third game of the season Friday night against the Rays but he had to leave in the eighth inning after being drilled by a line drive off the bat of Ben Zobrist.

5/24/2013 8:39:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander David Phelps was drilled in the right forearm in the eighth inning Friday against the Rays and had to leave the game.
Insight: The Yankees already lost Curtis Granderson to a broken pinky knuckle after he was hit on the hand during this game. Phelps allowed four earned runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings and is headed for his third win of the year. He has been outstanding since joining New York's rotation.

5/18/2013 8:39:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander David Phelps shut down Toronto over seven innings Saturday to pick up his second win of the year.
Insight: Phelps allowed six hits and one run, walked three and fanned eight. The right-hander has gone 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA and a 24/10 K/BB over 25 1/3 innings since joining the starting rotation in place of the injured Ivan Nova.

3/27/2013 11:00:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander David Phelps struck out nine batters in 5 1/3 innings Wednesday against the Orioles.
Insight: With Phil Hughes (back) starting the season on the DL, Phelps will make at least one start in April but he will probably go back to the bullpen when Hughes returns to action. He'll be the first man called upon in the case of an injury or if Ivan Nova struggles.

3/14/2013 3:14:00 PM
Description: Yankees righty David Phelps has a 0.64 ERA in 14 spring innings.
Insight: Phelps is trying to win New York's fifth starter spot and is doing a great job of impressing. Ivan Nova has been nearly as effective, allowing one run and one walk in nine innings.

10/1/2012 7:05:00 PM
Description: Yankees right-hander David Phelps will start in place of Ivan Nova Tuesday against Boston.
Insight: Phelps is 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA in 10 starts this season, striking out an impressive 50 batters in 52 innings as a starter. The Red Sox are ready for the season to end so Phelps could turn in a nice line in a spot-start.

7/4/2012 8:14:00 PM
Description: Yankees rookie pitcher David Phelps struck out a career-high eight batters in his third career start Wednesday at Tampa Bay. However, Phelps was yanked after 4 1/3 innings of one-run, two-hit ball.
Insight: The Yankees have been hesitant to extend Phelps. The right-hander was pulled after 81 pitches Wednesday. The short leash will prevent Phelps from having anything more than marginal fantasy value.
