Description: The Mets have sent outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis down to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Insight: He's no longer needed now that Juan Lagares has returned from a strained hamstring. Nieuwenhuis hit .222 with five RBI during his nine-game tenure with the big club.

Description: New York center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis exited Sunday's exhibition against the Marlins because of a bruised left knee.
Insight: For now, Nieuwenhuis is projected to open the season as the Mets' everyday center fielder. There's nothing too special about Nieuwenhuis' skill set (.252, 7 HR, 28 RBI in 91 games last season). We wouldn't waste a draft pick on him.

Description: Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 2-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs Thursday against the Rays.
Insight: Nieuwenhuis has been a solid NL-only outfielder this season, batting .298 with five homers and four steals. His .409 BABIP suggests his average will fall once his luck turns, but he posted a .355 BABIP at low-A in 2008, a .332 BABIP at high-A in 2009, a .338 BABIP at Double-A in 2010 and a .407 BABIP at Triple-A in 2011, so perhaps he won't regress too much there.

Description: Kirk Nieuwenhuis isn't starting tonight against the Phillies.
Insight: Manager Terry Collins was trying to put as many righties in his lineup as possible against lefthander Cliff Lee so he decided to give Nieuwenhuis (who bats lefthanded) the night off. Nieuwenhuis has been a pleasant surprise for the Mets so far this season, producing a .310 average, two homers and 10 RBIs through his first 29 games.
