(SportsNetwork.com) - It didn't take long for Chase Headley to make an impact with the New York Yankees. Now, he'll try to deliver again as the Yankees continue their four-game series with the Texas Rangers in the Bronx.
Acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres earlier Tuesday, Headley capped a whirlwind day with a game-winning single in the Yankees' 2-1, 14-inning victory.
Headley shot a line drive to left-center field off Nick Tepesch (3-6) with one out that brought home Brian Roberts and enabled the Yankees to avenge a 4-2 defeat to the last-place Rangers in Monday's opener of this four-game set.
The 2012 National League RBI champion had gone hitless in his first three at- bats after entering as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.
"I was thankful I had an opportunity," Headley said. "You have to want to be up in that spot."
Jacoby Ellsbury and Roberts each finished with two hits, with Ellsbury coming through with an RBI single against Joakim Soria that extended the contest.
Neither team managed to push home a run through the first 12 innings of play before Texas' J.P. Arencibia broke the stalemate with a solo homer in the 13th.
Runs may again to be hard to come by on Wednesday, as Texas sends righty Yu Darvish to the hill. Darvish was on point Friday in Toronto, as he allowed just a run and struck out 12 batters in 6 2/3 innings to improve to 9-5, while lowering his ERA to 2.88.
"It's really hard to be consistent; you have to know your body, and you have to know yourself," Darvish said. "I think I've been able to do that because I studied myself and studied the other guys."
Darvish is a perfect 2-0 in three starts versus the Yankees and has allowed just three runs in 20 innings against them.
New York, meanwhile, will counter with righty David Phelps, who is 4-4 with a 3.87 ERA. Phelps improved to 3-0 over his last seven starts on Friday, as he beat Cincinnati, holding the Reds to a pair of runs over 6 1/3 innings.
"He has kind of gone unnoticed," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's doing a really good job in our starting rotation. It took us a little time to get him going, to get his arm strength back for 100 pitches, but he's been really consistent for us."
This will be his second-ever start against the Rangers.
The Rangers won four of seven encounters a season ago.
