(Thursday, June 26)
Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 6, Minnesota 4
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jered Weaver ended a three-start winless stretch, Albert Pujols had three hits with two RBI and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim topped the Minnesota Twins 6-4.
Mike Trout added a two-run double in the seventh to put the Angels up 6-1, but the Twins didn't go away quietly.
They loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth against Ernesto Frieri, who gave up a single and issued two walks, and Joe Mauer cleared them by ripping a double into the left-field corner off Joe Smith.
Smith struck out Kendrys Morales swinging to end the game and collect his seventh save of the season.
The Angels completed a three-game sweep and wrapped up a perfect homestand with a season-best sixth straight victory.
Weaver (8-6) earned his first win since June 6 after a solid seven-inning outing. He allowed one run on eight hits, all singles, walked one and struck out six.
Mauer and Chris Parmelee each had three hits for Minnesota, which has lost eight straight on the road.
Ricky Nolasco (4-6) was charged with six runs on 11 hits over six-plus innings and suffered his first loss since May 25.
The Angels jumped on the Minnesota right-hander for two first-inning runs.
Kole Calhoun led off with a single and pilfered second before scoring on a Pujols base hit through the hole on the left side. Pujols also swiped a base and scored when Twins shortstop Pedro Florimon lost an Erick Aybar popup in the sun near the left-field line. Aybar was credited with a double on the play.
The Angels opened the third with three straight hits, as Pujols and Josh Hamilton each drove in a run to make it 4-0.
"I ran into a little trouble in the first and gave up a couple doubles in the third, but then I settled down," Nolasco said.
Minnesota was able to break through in the sixth against Weaver with three consecutive two-out singles by Mauer, Morales and Oswaldo Arcia producing a run.
Weaver found himself in another jam as the Twins placed men on the corners with two outs in the seventh. He then fell behind Brian Dozier 3-0, but retired him on a popup to short.
"I made some pitches to get out of some situations," Weaver said.
Trout padded the Angels' lead in the bottom of the seventh by greeting Minnesota reliever Matt Guerrier with a double down the left-field line. Efren Navarro and Calhoun had opened the frame with back-to-back singles off Nolasco.
The Angels also swept a three-game set against Texas on the homestand ... Weaver tossed a no-hitter against the Twins on May 2, 2012 at Angel Stadium ... Nolasco faced the Angels for the first time in his career ... With a single in the third inning, Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick pushed his hitting streak to 10 games.
