Scheffler captures Junior Am title
Truckee, CA (Sports Network) - Scottie Scheffler defeated Davis Riley, 3 & 2, in the 36-hole final on Saturday to win the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
Scheffler, 17, trailed for each of the first 30 holes of Saturday's final before winning four straight at Martis Camp Club to snare the title in dramatic fashion.
The comeback began at No. 31, where the 16-year-old Riley missed a 3-foot par putt, squaring the match.
At the next, Scheffler grabbed his first lead of the day when he drained a birdie putt from the fringe to go 1-up.
Gaining momentum, Scheffler dropped his second shot at the 33rd hole (the 562- yard, par-5 15th) within six feet. He narrowly missed the short eagle putt, but made the comebacker for birdie and a 2-up lead with three to play.
Riley found trouble at the 34th, as he send his approach just over the green, then incurred a 1-stroke penalty when his ball moved after address. He then left his par attempt short, and Scheffler had two putts for the win.
Taking advantage, Scheffler sent his putt inches from the hole, and when the par was conceded, he had completed the championship-clinching comeback.
On Friday, Scheffler had to wrap up his third-round match after two weather delays led to play being suspended due to darkness on Thursday. He needed four holes, and 19 in all, to oust Justin Suh, 1-up, then downed P.J. Samiere, 3 & 2, in the quarterfinals and Doug Ghim, 6 & 4, in the semis.
Riley never made it to the 17th hole on Friday. He knocked out China's Zecheng Dou, 4 & 2, in the quarters, then cruised by John Augenstein, 4 & 3, in the semifinals.
