Valois earns medalist honors at U.S. Mid-Am

Lake Forest, IL (Sports Network) - Brad Valois fired a 3-under 68 on Sunday to earn medalist honors at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

Valois ended the stroke-play portion at 1-under-par 141. His 68 was the low score for the first two days.

Matthew Mattare, one of the four first-round leaders, tripped to a 3-over 74 to slide into third place at plus-1.

Two courses were used for the first two rounds of stroke-play -- the Conway Farms Golf Club and the Knollwood Club.

Valois and Mattare played at Conway on Sunday, while White was at Knollwood.

Valois started on the back nine and collected three birdies to go with six pars on his opening nine. Around the turn, he faltered to bogeys at the second and fifth, but recovered those strokes with birdies on the sixth and ninth to claim medalist honors.

John Engler, Daniel Day, Jon Lindstrom and Kevin Wolf advanced to the match- play portion in a 9-for-4 playoff.

Defending champion Randal Lewis posted a 4-over 75 to end at 10-over-par 152. He finished in 82nd place and missed the cut for the match play portion of the championship.

Conway Farms will serve as host for the match-play portion of the championship. Match play runs from Monday to Thursday, when the championship ends with a 36-hole final.
