Hubbard moves ahead by 2 in Indiana
Evansville, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Hubbard carded a 4-under 68 on Saturday to claim a 2-stroke lead at the United Leasing Championship.
Hubbard finished three rounds at Victoria National Golf Club at 11-under-par 205. He is seeking his first career win on the Web.com Tour.
"It was more of a grind today. I really got into a good rhythm with my driver on the back nine," said Hubbard.
Second-round leader Tony Finau managed an even-par 72 to fall into second place at 9-under 207, while Andres Echavarria (70) is alone in third at minus-8.
Paul Claxton (66), Matt Weibring (68), Matt Davidson (69) and Chris Smith (71) are tied for fourth at 7-under. Peter Tomasulo (67), Justin Thomas (69) and Alexandre Rocha (73) shared eighth at 6-under 210.
Finau entered the day with a 2-shot lead, but Hubbard and Ryan Armour both birdied the second to move to 8-under and pull within one.
Thomas, meanwhile, was racing up the leaderboard with birdies at the first, fourth, sixth, eighth and 10th to make it a 3-way tie for second place.
Armour then posted a double-bogey at the third to fall off the pace as Thomas stayed hot with a birdie at the 12th to meet Finau at 9-under.
Finau answered with a birdie at the seventh to reclaim the outright lead before Thomas tripped to a double-bogey at the 15th to hand Finau a 2-shot advantage over Hubbard, Davidson, Smith and Echavarria.
Hubbard, who had followed his birdie at the second with six straight pars, birdied the ninth and 10th to pull within a shot of the lead as Finau picked up a shot at the ninth to move to minus-11.
Hubbard birdied the 12th to meet Hubbard there, and was handed the outright lead when Finau bogeyed the 11th to fall to 10-under.
Finau bounced back with a birdie at the 13th to reclaim a share of the lead before Hubbard rolled in a 35-foot birdie putt at the 14th to again grab a 1- shot advantage at 12-under.
After Finau and Hubbard traded bogeys at the 15th and 16th, respectively, to remain a shot apart, Finau tripped to a double-bogey at the 16th to fall to 8- under and hand Hubbard a 3-shot lead.
As Hubbard parred his final three holes to end at 11-under, Finau birdied the 17th to get back within two of the lead and parred the last to finish there.
"That was huge," Hubbard said of his birdie at the 17th. "Those last two holes really changed the momentum for me. The wheels were starting to come off there at the end."
NOTES: Hubbard, who is playing in his rookie season on the Web.com Tour, won once on the PGA Tour Canada last year ... Finau is also seeking his first in on the Web.com Tour and his best finish is a tie for fourth a the Rex Hospital Open in May ... With the threat of afternoon rain on Sunday, the final round will be played in threesomes off split tees starting at 7:48 a.m. local time.
