NCAA Game Summary - South Florida at Rutgers

(Saturday, November 5th)

Final Score: Rutgers 20, South Florida 17

Piscataway, N.J. (Sports Network) - San San Te hit a 37-yard field goal in overtime as Rutgers rallied past South Florida 20-17 at High Point Solutions Stadium.

Rutgers (6-3,3-2 Big East) only registered 228 yards of total offense, but scored two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to overcome a 14-point deficit and send the contest into overtime. Chas Dodd finished 11-of-17 for 125 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Scarlet Knights, and Mohamed Sanu added 11 catches for 113 yards.

South Florida (4-4,0-4) had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds of regulation, but Maikon Bonani's 27-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left as time expired. B.J. Daniels led the Bulls with 160 yards passing and one touchdown, and added 64 yards rushing on 15 attempts. Darrell Scott ran for 100 yards on 19 carries.

After a scoreless first quarter, Daniels hit Victor Marc for a 23-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 at the 6:11 mark of the second quarter. Bonani added a 43-yard field goal with 36 seconds left before halftime.

Te made it a one possession game at the 7:20 mark of the third quarter, connecting on a 33-yard field goal.

South Florida extended its lead to 17-3 with just under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, after Demetri Murray rushed for a four-yard touchdown run that capped a 13-play, 89-yard touchdown drive.

Rutgers got a spark on the ensuing kickoff, as Jeremy Deering returned the kick 98 yards for a touchdown. Dodd orchestrated a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive in the final three minutes, capping the march by finding Brandon Coleman on a 34-yard touchdown pass that tied the game at 17 with 1:08 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Daniels threw three straight incompletions and South Florida chewed up just 20 seconds off the clock. Rutgers took over following a Bulls' punt, but Dodd was intercepted at the South Florida 26-yard line two plays later, giving Daniels and company one more opportunity with 41 seconds left.

Daniels hit Murray for a 34-yard gain on the drive's first play, then rushed for another 30 yards down to the Rutgers 10-yard line on the following play. That set up a short-field goal try for Bonani, but the kicker missed left as regulation time expired.

On the first possession of overtime, Daniels was intercepted by Damon Huron on a third-and-eight call. That set up Te's game-winning field goal, which gave Rutgers its third fourth quarter come-from-behind win this season.
