NCAA Game Summary - Vanderbilt at Florida
(Saturday, November 5th)
Final Score: Florida 26, Vanderbilt 21
Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) - Jeff Demps rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns as he led the Florida Gators to a hard-fought, 26-21 decision over the Vanderbilt Commodores in a SEC tussle at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
As a team the Gators gashed Vandy for 197 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The other score came from quarterback Jacoby Brissett, but it was Jeff Brantley who did most of the throwing for Florida. Brantley had a quiet game for the Gators (5-4, 3-4 SEC), throwing for only 173 yards, but he did not commit a turnover and managed the game well.
The Commodores (4-5, 1-5) were led by Jordan Rodgers, who threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns, while also scoring once on the ground. The main option for Rodgers was Jordan Matthews, who hauled in a touchdown pass, while finishing with 170 yards on nine receptions.
After a scoreless first quarter the Gators took control of the game, scoring 17 straight points in the second stanza. The first score came midway through the quarter, as Brissett plunged into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown.
That was followed by a five-yard touchdown scamper by Demps, and an impressive 55-yard field goal by Caleb Sturgis in the final seconds of the half.
The Commodores got on the scoreboard late in the third frame when Rodgers connected with Matthews for a 26-yard touchdown pass.
Florida extended its lead in the final seconds of the quarter thanks to a 40- yard field goal by Sturgis.
Vandy cut its deficit to 20-14 early in the fourth stanza when Rodgers found an opening and rumbled into the end zone for an eight-yard score.
Florida responded later in the quarter with an eight-play, 94-yard drive, but most of that yardage was accumulated on Demps' 52-yard touchdown scamper. The Gators went for a two-point conversion to make it a two touchdown game, but the attempt failed, leaving the score at 26-14.
Less than a minute later the Commodores were back in business, as Rodgers connected with Chris Boyd for a 10-yard scoring strike. However, Vandy would come no closer, as the Gators were able to shut the door on the Commodores, while snapping a four-game slide.
