NCAA Game Summary - San Jose State at Colorado State

Fort Collins, CO (Sports Network) - Matt Faulkner completed 25-of-38 passes, for 313 yards and two TDs, leading the San Jose State to a 38-31 win over non- conference opponent Colorado State and in turn ending a 16-game road losing streak.

Brandon Rutley had a strong showing for the Spartans as well, gaining 131 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns. Ryan Otten scorched the Rams' defense with 112 receiving yards and a touchdown on six receptions.

Pete Thomas led Colorado State by completing 28-of-43 pass attempts for a career-best 387 yards and three touchdowns. He also contributed a team best 20 rushing yards and another score on the ground. Lou Greenwood was Thomas's favorite target during the game, as he caught six balls for career-high 149 yards and two TDs.

San Jose State got off to a good start as Rutley ran 12 yards for a touchdown on the Spartans' opening drive to give his team a 7-0 lead just three minutes into the contest.

The Spartans would add to the lead on their next drive as Jens Alvernik made a 37-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Colorado State answered with a 41-yard pitch and catch from Thomas to Greenwood to bring the Rams within three points with two and a half minutes remained in the opening period.

San Jose State once again added to its lead in the second quarter when a Raymond Carter fumble was returned 20 yards for a touchdown by Duke Ihenacho to make the score 17-7 four minutes into the period.

Later in the second stanza, Rutley scored his second touchdown of the game on a 23-yard dash to the end zone to give the Spartans a 24-7 advantage.

Colorado State fought back as the half neared its end when Thomas found Greenwood for another score, this time from 25 yards out to bring the score to 24-14.

A six minute drive to start the second half by the Rams yielded three points as the possession ended with Ben DeLine connecting from 28 yards away, bringing Colorado State closer at 24-17.

San Jose State scored on its first possession of the half as well with a 12-play, 88-yard drive. Faulkner connected with Ryan Otten for a 10-yard score to make it 31-17 with under four minutes left in the third quarter.

Later in the quarter, the Rams took over in their opponent's territory following Momo Thomas's interception of Faulkner. On the next play Thomas threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Coffman to bring the Rams back within one touchdown as the game progressed into the final frame.

The home team evened the score at 31 with 11:31 remaining in the fourth quarter when Thomas took it in himself from nine yards away.

The teams remained tied for nearly the rest of the quarter until Faulkner threw a 38-yard touchdown pass with just 54 seconds remaining in the game to Jabari Carr, catapulting the visiting Spartans to a 38-31 victory.

The Spartans won despite allowing Colorado State to amass 458 yards of total offense. San Jose State finished with 450 yards.
