Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Tanner Price completed 21-of-35 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns, leading Wake Forest to a 35-30 upset over No. 23 Florida State on Saturday afternoon.
Mike Campanaro caught four passes for 60 yards and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass, while Josh Harris had a big day on the ground for Wake Forest (4-1, 3-0 ACC), rushing 13 times for 136 yards.
Chris Givens hauled in six passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
E.J. Manuel threw for 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and Clint Trickett completed 6-of-11 pass attempts for 29 yards and two picks for Florida State (2-3, 0-2).
Rashad Greene caught 12 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown, while Ty Jones and James Wilder added rushing scores for the Seminoles.
On the Seminoles' first possession of the game, Trickett was picked off by Joey Ehrmann and it was returned 50 yards down to the Florida State 30.
"I'm never worried about Joey mixing it up, but sometimes I do worry that he might mix it up too much," Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe said. "He's full of life and loves to play, and it was great to see him make some big plays today. He was finally on fire today making those plays."
From there, Wake Forest could only get to the nine-yard line, but Jimmy Newman was true on the chip shot from 27 yards out to give the Demon Deacons a 3-0 lead.
Late in the first quarter, Florida State grabbed a 7-3 lead when Trickett led a 10-play, 80-yard drive down to the Wake Forest three before Wilder punched it in to the end zone for a touchdown.
The Demon Deacons needed only two plays and a little trickery to take the lead early in the second quarter.
Price connected with Givens on a 40-yard pass which took the ball down to the Florida State 30. On the next play, Price handed the ball off to Campanaro, who then found Terence Davis in the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown strike. Newman's extra-point try was blocked, keeping the Wake Forest lead at 9-7.
With just over three minutes to go before halftime, the Wake Forest defense came up with another big play when Trickett was intercepted by Zachary Allen.
The Demon Deacons offense took over at the Florida State 38 and needed four plays to put the ball into the end zone courtesy of a 22-yard strike from Price to Givens for a 16-7 lead.
On the Seminoles' next drive, Manuel found Greene wide open down the middle of the field for a 46-yard touchdown strike to make it 16-14 with 54 seconds to go before the break.
After halftime, Florida State began its first drive on the 20, but immediately went backwards on losses of 15, two and three yards, giving Wake Forest a safety and a four-point lead.
Later, Wake Forest used a 42-yard run by Harris to spark a five-play, 78-yard drive before Price found Tommy Bohanon for a two-yard touchdown pass and a 25-14 cushion.
Florida State drove 33 yards in eight plays on its ensuing possession before Dustin Hopkins connected on a 40-yard field goal to make it 25-17.
The Demon Deacons extended their lead to 32-17 when Price took his team 71 yards on nine plays, finding Davis in the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown strike early in the fourth.
But the Seminoles fought back on their ensuing drive, going 71 yards in seven plays with help from a 37-yard completion to Greene. Jones pushed into the end zone from three yards out to make it a 32-24 contest.
Newman connected on a 32-yard field goal to make it 35-24.
Florida State made it a five-point game with less than a minute to go when Manuel hooked up with Kenny Shaw on a two-yard touchdown pass. Manuel's pass attempt for the two-point conversion fell incomplete.
The Seminoles were unable to recover the ensuing onside kick and the Demon Deacons ran out the last 53 seconds to secure the win.
"Very disappointing, very disappointing performance," Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said. "The same issues. Five turnovers, you can't win a football game. Thirteen penalties, you can win a football game. We had opportunities. We had the momentum at halftime. Very disappointing."
It was the first time in school history that Wake Forest started a season 3-0 in conference play...Despite being listed as a receiver, Campanaro is 3-for-3 this season as a passer, with 106 yards and two touchdowns...Seminoles defensive end Bjoern Werner finished with two sacks.
