Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Latavius Murray ran for a touchdown and caught another, as the UCF Knights topped the SMU Mustangs, 17-7, in the Conference USA title game at Bright House Networks Stadium in Orlando.
Murray ran 20 times for 94 yards and caught two passes for 21 yards, as UCF (10-3, 7-1 C-USA) captured its second C-USA title since the league split into two divisions in 2005. QB Jeffrey Godfrey completed 15-of-19 pass attempts for 167 yards and a touchdown, while the UCF defense recorded two takeaways and five sacks.
Kyle Padron guided SMU (7-6, 6-2) in the loss with 220 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-34 pass attempts. He, however, was also picked off twice. Darius Johnson was the main target with nine receptions for 105 yards, while Zach Line paced the ground attack with 94 yards on 18 carries.
The Knights scored on the opening drive, as Godfrey tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to Murray at the 7:32 point of the first quarter. The score capped a 13-play, 73-yard drive.
The next points of the game came on the last play of the opening half when Nick Cattoi booted a 29-yard field goal to give UCF a 10-0 lead at the break.
UCF added to its lead in the third quarter behind a 36-yard touchdown run by Murray with 6:25 left in the period.
With 9:15 remaining in the game SMU finally got on the board, as Padron threw a 22-yard scoring strike to Aldrick Robinson to complete a 10-play, 88-yard drive.
The Knights, however, would step up on defense and keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
The Knights tied a school record with their 10th win of the year...This is the third time UCF has hosted the C-USA title game...The Knights are now 2-1 in C- USA championship bouts, also taking home the hardware in 2007...This was SMU's first appearance in the C-USA title game...The Mustangs haven't won a league crown since they were co-champs of the Southwest Conference in 1984...SMU earned a spot in this contest by virtue of a 45-38 overtime victory over East Carolina in its regular season finale.
