Final Score: (13) Utah 56, San Jose State 3
Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Jordan Wynn returned to the lineup and threw for a pair of touchdowns passes, as the 13th-ranked Utah Utes destroyed the San Jose State Spartans, 56-3, in non-conference action from Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Wynn, who had been out of action since injuring his thumb during a season- opening victory over Pittsburgh, completed 14-of-18 passes for 124 yards for the Utes (4-0), who have won 20 straight games at home.
Eddie Wide, Matt Asiata, Reggie Dunn, Beau Burton, and Tauni Vakapuna each scored a touchdown on the ground for Utah, which racked up 272 rushing yards.
Shawn Asiata and Dallin Rogers caught TD passes for the Utes, who are off to a 4-0 start for the second time in three years.
"It was a great effort by our team. We played an exceptionally clean game, no turnovers and only one penalty for five yards," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said. "Jordan Wynn looked good and was sharp. The defense played solid and our special teams played well, partially blocking a punt, and the return game was productive."
Jordan La Secla connected on 8-of-12 passes for 67 yards for the Spartans (1-3), who have not won a regular-season, non-conference road bout since topping Illinois back in 2002.
"We couldn't get any first downs, once again," La Secla said. "We started to run the ball later, but then we would get a penalty and shoot ourselves in the foot. We need to keep working on it."
After the Spartans went three-and-out to start the game, Utah needed just one play to score. Dunn took the handoff and scampered 43 yards into the end zone.
Mike Honeycutt returned the ensuing kickoff 71 yards to set up San Jose State at the 20. The Spartans, though, had to settle for a Harrison Waid 20-yard field goal.
Utah bridged the first and second quarters with an 11-play, 69-yard drive. Shawn Asiata capped things with a 10-yard TD catch to make it a 14-3 game.
The Utes took control when Reggie Topps returned a blocked punt 10 yards for a score. On the next Utah possession, Wide recorded an eight-yard rushing touchdown to give Utah a 28-3 lead with 9:40 left until half.
Wynn and Rogers hooked up for a 36-yard score before the break to give Utah a 35-3 advantage.
The Utes got the ball to start the second half and put together an 11-play, 71-yard drive. Matt Asiata rumbled into the end zone from one yard out to finish off the march.
Vakapuna's one-yard rushing TD early in the fourth quarter made it a 49-3 game. Burton's seven-yard score with 2 1/2 minutes remaining accounted for the final margin.
