Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Trevor Vittatoe threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns as he led the Miners of Texas-El Paso to a 28-14 win over the SMU Mustangs in Conference USA action at the Sun Bowl.
Vittatoe converted 17-of-28 passes for the Miners (6-4, 3-4 C-USA) as they snapped a three-game slide.
The Mustangs (5-5, 4-2) were paced by Kyle Padron who hit 28-of-44 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown and also landed in the end zone on one of his six rushing attempts as well.
UTEP jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter as Vittatoe hit Evan Davis and Pierce Hunter with touchdown passes for 12 and six yards, respectively.
Late in the second quarter Padron directed the Mustangs on a lengthy 99-yard drive, culminating with a 31-yard TD pass to Aldrick Robinson to cut the deficit to 14-7.
However, before the half could end, Vittatoe and the Miners put together an 87-yard drive of their own as the signal-caller hit Marlon McClure with a 13- yard scoring strike to make the score 21-7 at the break.
The only points of the third frame came on a one-yard TD run by Padron, but UTEP responded in the fourth with a two-yard TD run by Leilvon Myers to give the home team a 14-point victory.
