Denton, TX (Sports Network) - Charles Ross punched in a two-yard rushing touchdown with 6:22 remaining as the Rice Owls snuck past the North Texas Mean Green, 32-31, in a non-conference battle at Fouts Field.
Tyler Smith ran for 92 yards on just 12 carries for Rice (1-1) en route to the victory. Nick Fanuzzi hit on 12-of-23 pass attempts for 189 yards and a touchdown, while Sam McGuffie caught four balls for 91 yards and a score.
North Texas (0-2) was led by quarterback Nathan Tune, who threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-37 passing. Tyler Stradford was his main target with four catches for 111 yards and a touchdown, while Lance Dunbar led the ground attack with 105 yards and a score on 17 carries.
The Owls took a 7-0 advantage as Taylor McHargue connected with McGuffie for a 51-yard touchdown pass just under two minutes into the tussle. Chris Boswell hit a 50-yard field goal shortly after to extend Rice's lead.
North Texas answered back on its next drive, going 75 yards in 11 plays as Tune hooked up with Dunbar on a four-yard touchdown completion.
Rice was able to finish the first quarter with a 16-7 advantage after Boswell converted two more field goals, from 23 and 50 yards, respectively.
The Mean Green were the first team to strike in the second quarter as Tune struck Jamaal Jackson with a 14-yard touchdown pass, making the score 16-14.
Later in the second, the Owls reached paydirt as Fanuzzi completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Luke Wilson.
North Texas answered back on its very next drive as the Mean Green marched quickly, taking only 1:19 off the clock and going 68 yards on five plays. The drive was capped with a four-yard touchdown rush by Dunbar as the Mean Green went into halftime trailing 23-21.
North Texas came out of the break firing as Tune completed a 75-yard touchdown to Stradford to give the Mean Green a 28-23 lead.
Rice brought the game to 28-26 after Boswell's fourth field goal of the night, this time from 24 yards.
The score stayed that way until North Texas received a 24-yard field goal from Trent Deans to extend its lead to 31-26 early in the fourth quarter.
After the touchdown by Ross to put Rice ahead 32-31, the Owls were unsuccessful on the two-point conversion attempt. However, the Mean Green just didn't have enough as the Owls' defense was able to hold down the fort for their first victory of the season.
