Troy, AL (Sports Network) - Corey Robinson found Shawn Southward on a 17-yard touchdown pass with under 22 seconds remaining to lift the Troy Trojans to a 35-28 victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves in a Sun Belt Conference battle at Movie Gallery Stadium.
Robinson completed 18-of-38 passes under center in the win for Troy (2-2, 1-0 SBC), throwing for 316 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the process. Jerrel Jernigan caught 10 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown as well for the Trojans, while Chris Anderson ran for 75 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Ryan Aplin threw for 237 yards and a pair of touchdowns with one interception to lead Arkansas State (1-3, 1-2) in the losing effort. The signal-caller added an 89-yard performance on the ground as well. Allen Muse caught seven passes for 119 yards and a score for the Red Wolves.
The Trojans struck first here, as Robinson completed a 70-yard toss to Jernigan to finish a three-play, 77-yard opening drive.
The Red Wolves responded midway through the stanza with a two-yard Derek Lawson touchdown scamper.
But the Trojans regained the lead late in the frame after Jamie Hampton completed a three-yard strike to Tebiarus Gill.
Troy made it 21-7 early in the second quarter with a four-yard Chris Anderson run.
A Jermaine Robinson 14-yard run with under two minutes remaining in the half pulled the Red Wolves to within 21-14, but the Trojans answered with a 27-yard Michael Taylor field goal to earn a 24-14 halftime lead.
Taylor extended the Trojan lead further with a 43-yard kick early in the final period of play.
The Red Wolves responded with a four-yard scoring pass from Aplin to Kedric Murry midway through the frame, and took a 28-27 lead with under a minute to play on a 30-yard strike from Aplin to Allen Muse.
The Trojans, however, took just five plays and 28 seconds to go 67 yards and convert the decisive score of the meeting.
The game was delayed one hour and 45 minutes late in the second quarter due to lightning.
